Justin E. Gray Candidate Statement

I respectfully submit this statement of candidacy for the June 2017 election to serve as Treasurer of the SDIPLA.  I have actively participated in the SDIPLA since moving to San Diego in 2010, and welcome the opportunity to give back to both this great organization as well as the San Diego IP community at large, by serving on the Board.  My goals in serving on the Board are to broaden our membership base, increase attendance and participation at our events, as well as help locate dynamic speakers for our programs.  I also want to elicit more feedback from our members on how the SDIPLA can better serve all of us.

I have worked for Foley & Lardner LLP since 2006, focusing my practice on patent litigation in a variety of technologies spanning from telecommunications and medical devices to LED aquarium lighting and garden tools.  While working at Foley & Lardner, I have been fortunate to be able to pursue other activities in the IP field, including serving as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law for two years, where I taught patent law.  I have also authored a blog focusing on claim construction (“Gray on Claims”) since June 2009, where I have published close to 200 articles, and have served as an editor of a blog focusing on IP litigation trends (“IP Litigation Current”) since May 2013.  Through these activities I have become friends with thought leaders in our field, including Hal Wegner, who I would like to have join us again in the coming years as a speaker.

I greatly appreciate both the membership of the SDIPLA as well as the Board for your consideration, and sincerely hope to continue the traditions this organization has built over the last 60+ years.
